It seems like over the past couple of years Tom Hanks has not been on the big screen all that often. Sure there is “Cloud Atlas” from last year, but you have to go all the way back to 2006 before we reach a blockbuster film starring Hanks…not counting the animated film “Toy Story 3” from 2010 though. But, whenever us fans are starting to ask ourselves, “Where has Tom been?”, he comes out of nowhere and shows everyone in the world why he is one of the best actors of all time. You really cannot ask for a better performance than the one that Hanks provides us with as he plays Captain Phillips.
Since this film is based on a true story and since I am not very familiar with the actual story from back in 2009, I cannot say if there are any discrepancies (which surely there are because every movie ever made BASED on a true story has their differences) worth mentioning at this time. Ever since seeing the preview for this film for the first time, I knew that this was going to be a great movie to check out in theaters. It is always easier to spend the ridiculous price of a movie ticket when you know those films that you attend at the theater are going to be an enjoyable watch.
The story is about the 2009 hijacking of the American cargo ship, Maersk Alabama, near the Far East coast of Somalia. Captain Phillips and the crew run the standard countermeasures drills in order to prepare for the chance of an attack, but in the middle of one of the drills, two small blimps appear on the radar. A few minutes later, the Captain and the crew’s fears all come to life as they must now try and fight off the pirates that want to take over their ship. One slight factor that is against the crew of the Maersk Alabama, they have no weapons aboard the ship. If the crew is unsuccessful, will they have the opportunity to see another day? The director/writers of this film portray Somalis as people who are empty-headed and are not able to figure simple things out. That is really my only knock about this film as this is simply a film that is pulsating and one that I will enjoy watching over and over again.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
